Happy New Year all you Gen X’ers and Boomers.
At The Silver Academy we’re calling 2025 The Year of The Silver Entrepreneur. And it’s going to be a good one.
Because let’s face it, 2024 was crap.
Inflation, a flabby economy, a shrinking jobs market, rampant ageism, distracted, underexperienced politicians, and an obsession with tech, all seemed to conspire against the UK’s older, underemployed workforce.
And don’t get us wrong, we’re not technophobic or ‘too old for tech.’ We love tech. We invented it. But there is a right place and a right time…
But time is not on our side. That is one of the realities of being older. If you’re over a certain age you must accept this: You cannot rely on the government, or corporations to solve your ‘I’m living longer, I need to work longer’ problem for you. Even though it is quite obviously in their interests to do so.
No one is going to create jobs for you. The corporations who have eased us out, via Covid, cost cutting and cunning, are not going to have an ‘age positive’ epiphany. So don’t sit by the phone waiting for the call.
Be honest with yourself. Those online job applications you’re doing are pretty much a waste of your precious time. The algorithms are ageist. End of.
So if you’re wondering how you are going to thrive in the age of no retirement, we’d suggest this should be your New Year’s resolution: Become a Silver Entrepreneur.
Take all the experience, skill, ideas, wisdom and humanity you’ve accumulated over the last 25+ years of work, and start a new beautiful business doing something you love.
It could be a one-person driving school, a coffee shop on your high street, a children’s nursery, a film school, an organic farm, an age-tech incubator, a fin-tech behemoth…
The good news is you are more likely to succeed as an entrepreneur in your 50s or 60s than you would in your 20s or 30s.
Take note investors. Harvard’s report on this matter is pretty conclusive. If you want to back a winner, back a Silver Entrepreneur.
And, at The Silver Academy, what will we do?
Well, for a start, we’re not going to waste too much time boffing on about ageism.
Take ageism as a given. It’s the injustice and stupidity of ageism that turbo-charges our determination to succeed.
This is what we are going to do: We’re going to grow, develop and support a community of Silver Entrepreneurs with the inspirational content, and the tools, advice, support, and community they need to succeed.
So please sign up for the Silver Academy. Get stuck in. Whether you want to start a business, get advice, learn skills, or find investment.
If you’re an organisation who ‘gets’ the age opportunity and wants to partner with us, please don’t hesitate to get involved.
